Founded in 1870

Origin & Foundation

The legacy of the Society that dates back to 1870 as the oldest District Society in the UK and a founder of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).

Our Beginnings

The Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants was established in 1870 as the very first District Society in the UK. At a time when the accountancy profession was still taking shape, the LSCA played a defining role in setting standards, promoting integrity, and supporting the development of what would become one of the most respected professions in the world.

Our founding members were pioneers — committed to building a professional community rooted in trust, expertise, and public service.

Founding Role in the ICAEW

As one of the four original Societies that came together to form the ICAEW, the LSCA helped lay the foundations of the Institute itself.

This legacy is not simply historical; it continues to shape our identity today. Our long-standing relationship with the ICAEW reflects a shared commitment to excellence, ethics, and the advancement of the profession.

Our Region and Community

From the outset, the LSCA has represented a broad and diverse region. Our membership stretches from Southport in the north, through the Liverpool City Region, and across Chester and North Wales.

This geographical reach gives us a unique perspective on the needs of local professionals and the businesses they serve. We remain deeply connected to our members, ensuring that their voices are heard and their interests represented.

Our Continuing Identity and Role

Although the ICAEW has recently taken on more direct responsibility for certain administrative and networking functions — including the creation of the ICAEW Liverpool Network — the LSCA remains the organisation most closely associated with representing Chartered Accountants at a grassroots level.

We are the custodians of the region’s professional heritage, and we continue to champion the values, standards, and community spirit that have defined us for more than 150 years.

Leadership and Engagement

The Society continues to be led by an active committee, including a President, Deputy President, and Vice President, all of whom bring experience, energy, and commitment to their roles.

We maintain strong relationships with other professional bodies, business groups, and civic organisations across the region, ensuring that Chartered Accountants remain a visible and influential part of the Liverpool business landscape
